We (D and I) have a fryer we can bring, if needed. I'll try and get some oil for it as well. What I don't have for it is propane. If I must, I'll pull a bottle off the camper and use it.

I received this email today. Let's keep James King in our prayers.

Good morning everyone,
My heart is heavy this morning typing this out for all of James' friends and
fans. My best friend was admitted into Dan ville Regional Medical Center
yesterday for blood clots in his lungs and leg. I am sorry to inform everyone
that he will be in the hospital until the clots have dissolved and his blood
work is back to normal. Everyone needs prayer, and James needs your prayers at
this time. Anyone wanting to send well wishes are welcome to do so, via our
post office box (P.O. Box 10179) in Danville, Virginia 24543. His condition
is stable at this point, but still very serious. He is not taking phone calls,
nor visitors until the infection and clotting subsides. I will appreciate
everyone's thoughts, prayers, and concerns during his recovery.

Thank you and we will see you all down the road.

OK Laurel on the Sam's club oil, But I have always used Peanut oil, 2 yrs ago both Ernie and I came with 5 gallons of it each... and ok I did mean the reg oil is pretty brown and burnt after one to 3 birds.
Laurel if you can get me say 7-10 gallons of oil from Sam's I'll resend my Turkey money pledge and buy oil instead, and pay you when I see you there.

So to me what we need is WHO has Propane, WHO is bringing Oil, WHO is bringing a fryer and I think we have the Birds covered.

Turkey talk--some folks read Facebook and don't read Grillbillie bulletin board (about the shortage of turkey contributors). SURPRISE --out of the blue comes a call from daughter Kathleen (from reading my note 8 /24 on Facebook) and saying "SURE- ADD ONE (Acme list/$20.00) donated from Kathleen (Flynn-Blevins) Parsons and Andy Parsons--parents of Joshua (grandson 5 &1/2) and new grandson Drew (6 mos.) Kathleen and Andy attended last year as Sunday day people and were impressed how a core group of 60 Grillbillie volunteers fed Thanksgiving to 375-400 (?) people. Add ONE MORE TURKEY to the volunteer count.

Last year we used 3 fryers and vegetable oil. Oil wasn't pretty after about three birds, but heck of a lot cheaper than peanut oil, which isn't good for some folks anyway. I'll bring my fryer again, and some vegetable oil. Thanks Fred, yes, the breasts would of been 8-9 pounds or thereabouts.

Just wondering about the cooking oil not being good for more than 1 turkey.
Since my Mom is allergic to peanuts I don't use peanut oil.
I use the frying oil from Sam's Club.
I have been using that in the past and doing multiple turkeys.

Sorry I just saw this, count me in for a turkey (or towards oil, see below), maybe Ernie and Rox will be in as well.
As for the size we have never deep fried a larger than 14 lb turkey in fact the fryer boxes say to use under 13 lbs. I believe the breasts were 8-9, 2 yrs ago when I fried them with the small birds. I do know that 2 yrs ago we deep fried 240lbs of bird and 55lbs of beef and 35lbs of pork.
Now that we have the turkey's covered, what about the peanut oil that's the expensive part?
AND when we went 2 yrs ago to get peanut oil from the Acme all they had was quarts at high dollars and reg oil is not good for more than one turkey. 2 yrs ago peanut oil at BJ's was $53 for 5 gallons (about 1 and a third normal fryer kit pots).

I can't go to BJ's we don't have the membership anymore but will put money towards it.
Also Jodie and I will go down TUESDAY and tape off the Grillbillie area.

One of them BP turkey chefs tried to put a big frozen turkey bird down in one of them oil wells and lookey what happened… The dang thing blew up and now there’s oil everywhere!!! It’s just like that feller Fred said…

So y’all go for them fresh smaller sized birds and don’t use too much oil on ‘em neither.

I called Stan at ACME and requested the 10-14 lb turkeys. I'm pretty sure we've fried larger ones in the past but changed the size just in case. So they'll be around the $20 price range per turkey. They come in boxes of 4 so he'll order 4 boxes (for a total of 16) just in case we need more than 10. He'll defrost turkey breasts for us if we need them. We just need to let him know on Thursday or Friday so he can take them out of the freezer.

Yes you need to be careful on the size of the turkey fitting in the pot so that is it covered with oil without the oil overflowing.
I would keep the turkeys to 13 pounds or get the breasts.
Has anyone fried a bigger turkey?

I'm pretty sure last year we deep-fried 23 turkey breasts, not whole turkeys, doesn't matter to us fryers :).. Just wanted to pass that along. I can't recall the average weight of them though. maybe 8-9 lbs is a good guess. Slideman or Matt might know.

Just called ACME store in Woodstown and told them we will need 10 turkeys, maybe more. Fresh turkeys run about 14-16 lbs. at $1.69 lb (around $27.00). So they're a little more than the $20 I originally figured.

I know we have 8 turkeys donated so far but we need a lot more. I'm calling again on Tuesday so you still have time to post your donation here.

You'll simply give your $ donation to Matt and the turkeys will be picked up on Sunday, deep fried to perfection, skillfully carved and served steaming hot, trimmings and all, at our feast of thanks. Yummy!

The fresh turkeys tend to be a little smaller too so they'll definitely fit in the fryers. If you plan to donate a turkey, post it here by August 20th. I will keep a tally and order the total. Re: Labor Day Grillbillie Thanksgiving turkeys--Ben Jurnatowski (?spelling?) from Doylestown jam would probably remember the number of turkeys--I think it was 23 and there was a comfortable margin of a few pans of cooked meat left over.Fresh turkey contribution is key--a frozen turkey and a hot oil fryer =equals bang.The prior notice to Acme meat mgr. in Woodstown (on # needed) should be 2 weeks prior to--or about August 20 to allow him time to plan the order with HIS supplier.

Looking ahead to Del Val, I'm thinking we should let the ACME store know that we're going to want fresh turkeys again. Last year we called too late and he was unable to accomodate a large order. I think in the past we gave him a pretty accurate number of turkeys we would need and Matt collected money and picked them all up on Sunday. So if you're planning on donating a turkey, post it here and I will call them a week before the festival with an order. Figure around $20 per turkey. Slide and I are already thinking about cutting boards, knives and our cutting station. IEIEIE

Tomorrow morning Fred and I are leaving for Arcadia to do Grillbillie Easter. Right now all parents are stable so we are going.

Chris and I will be doing a benefit for breast cancer. This is my our 1st time in planning this. If anyone has any great ideas. Please feel free to share them with us. This will be at the house in Hunlock Creek,PA. I hope all can attend. I will have updates as we go along. We have car show people, flea markets,music, food, face painting. I am working on more as we speak. Please let me know your thoughts. This is an awful thing for women to go thur. My girlfreind died 2 years ago.His sister inlaw was just dianoised with it also 2 months ago. I know several women who have suffered dearly. Lets all get together and may it a positive perduction. Wintergrass was an absolute BLAST! Can't wait till next year! The hotel is awesome, the staff is fantastic, kind and always there to help. Wilmington Winterfest was bigger and better than last year. Michelle and Kevin J. and all their volunteers created a smooth running fest.It was interesting the far places people came from--Mass., Conn., Long Island, Lower Maryland, etc.etc. Since this was a "sell-out" of rooms, they may need a bigger hotel next year ?? A month ago everybody was snowed in and this weekend included OUTDOOR Outside 'jams' and picking in 65 degree weather--nice change.

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Wilmington Festival...I love a festival in a hotel..so easy and convenient and no campsite to put up or take down. There is absoutely nothing better than good friends, good food/drinks and good music all under one roof. We are so there next year.

What a blast at Wilmington Wintergrass. Should be called SpringGrass though. The hotel and staff were so nice and hospitable. The most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on! Anyone have pictures of the passed out guy we used for staging our photos? His wife was even helping us. What a good sport! If you have photos, please email them. We will be there next year for sure! So good to see everyone again!

For those of you who do not recognize the name Ron is in the AFBA and worked the gate and/or parking at the AFBA festivals, NEPA fest, and OATS festival.
He is the guy in the suspenders who keeps quiet camping quiet at the OATS festival.

Dottie had problems with her eyesight so she loved to ride around on the golf cart with me when Ron and Fred were together trying to stay out of trouble.
We will miss her. She was the sweetest lady.
